The KUGB National Student Championships (often just "the Student Nationals") is the first major competition of the academic year and falls in the middle of Michaelmas Term. The competition is open to all KUGB members in full-time education and is held in Chesterfield.
This year the annual KUGB national tournament saw a massive turn out with many familiar faces making an appearance, especially a couple of our friendly adversaries from the Northern Regions squad. However CUKC, as always, was unphased by the challenge, with yet another medal haul for the light blues.
On the men's side of things, there was a tense Cambridge final with Thibault eventually taking gold and Jonty taking silver in the men's kumite kyu grade category and Craig Woodhead seizing pole position with a gold in the men's kyu grade kata.
The Cambridge women were out in numbers with two extremely strong teams entered for kumite, which once again resulted in a light blue final. Team A made up of Keisha, Gosia, Emma and Maddy were victorious, taking gold while Team B made up of Helen, Jenny, Jolanta and Tiina took home the silver. Again there were solid individual performances throughout the women's squad with Emma Nunn taking 2nd place in the women's black belt kumite and Tiina Pajuste taking 1st place in the women's kyu grade kata.
All in all, a very successful competition and a great way for CUKC to see off the noughties.
