The KUGB Central Regions Championships is held annually during the competition-filled Lent Term. The competition is open to all KUGB affiliated clubs in the centre of the country and is held in Chesterfield.
The CUKC squad travelled to the KUGB Central Regions Championships in Chesterfield and had a great day competing against some of the best clubs in the country.
The squad was 14 strong including many people in their first competition and representing Cambridge for the first time. There were so many fantastic performances I almost don't know where to start. Everyone has trained very hard over the year and for this competion but that's only half the story, converting this to top performances is very tough with the nerves of competing but everyone did themselves proud.
In the men's kyu grade kata Andrew and Tri did fantastically well against a lot of higher grades to take 3rd and 4th respectively. In the women's kyu grade kata Adrienne led the way with some fantastic performances to take the gold medal whilst Steph and Libby took 3rd and 4th to help Cambridge dominate the event. For most of these guys it was their first competion, entering takes quite some guts but to get medals too is fantastic. In the black belt categories Madeleine took 4th in the very tough women's dan grade kata event. In the men's black belt competition Paul took 4th place and I took the silver medal.
In the kumite Chris, Adam and Andrew entered the men's kyu grade kumite for their first taste of fighting and did very well to battle against some very tough fighters. Chris did especially well to take 3rd place showing real determination to keep going after taking a few knocks. In the women's U21 kumite Madeline fought excellently in a highly competitive event and rounded it off with a great final to take gold. Steph in the over 21 kumite also did very well against a number of black belts to take 3rd place. In the men's dan grade kumite both Nick and Paul made it to the semi finals and 3rd place which hasn't been done by anyone from CUKC for ages and is a fantastic achievment.
In the team competitions Madeleine, Steph and Libby took 4th place with their team kata. In the men's kumite Malcolm, Kai and Chris fought brilliantly to get to the semi finals and win a well deserved bronze. Myself, Paul and Nick got to the final and retained the men's team kumite trophy for the club, Paul showing real courage to beat the fighter who had just won gold in the individual event to seal the match.
By my count that's 16 medals which is a great haul and overall the club came 2nd in the kata and 3rd in kumite which is pretty good since half the events are for children.
Give them all a pat on the back if you see them!
Kata: 2nd
Kumite: 3rd
