CUKC’s 2024 Annual Dinner took place at Selwyn College on 14 June, bringing current members and alumni together for a formal evening celebrating the club’s achievements.
Celebrating the season
President Callum Reid thanked members for their dedication and enthusiasm, the committee for organising training and socials, and Sensei Ken for passing on his knowledge. Sensei Ken reflected on former President and Men’s Captain Steve Mannion, an early role model whom he had recently met again in Cambridge.
Over dinner, past and current members shared stories of how CUKC has developed. Women’s Captain Elizabeth Li, with contributions from Men’s Captain Jack Doust, celebrated the squad’s BUCS and Varsity performances and its eighteenth consecutive Varsity win.
The Bob Poynton Award
The Old Karateka Association created the Bob Poynton Memorial Trophy in memory of CUKC’s much-loved former grading examiner. Each year it recognises an unsung hero whose achievements and contribution might otherwise go unacknowledged.
The 2024 award went to Emma Shen. Since beginning karate in October 2023, Emma has trained with exceptional tenacity, made rapid progress at gradings and competitions, and generously photographed many CUKC events. Her passion and determination have earned admiration across the club.
The Wizard of Hom
The evening concluded with the annual play, written by Social Secretary Erin Connelly. The Wizard of Hom - CUKC’s parody of The Wizard of Oz - involved the whole room and ended in laughter before everyone headed to the after-party.
